Toronto FC bolstered their squad with some experienced European players by signing former Germany midfielder Torsten Frings and ex-Netherlands forward Danny Koevermans, the Major League Soccer club said on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old Frings and 32-year-old Koevermans became two of the club’s “designated players” who are paid mainly outside the team’s salary cap and will begin playing after July 15 when the MLS transfer window opens.

Barcelona has signed promising midfielder Thiago Alcantara to a two-year contract extension that ties him to the Spanish champion until 2015. Barcelona did not reveal terms of the deal, which sees the 20-year-old’s buyout clause set at ?90 million ($127 million). Thiago scored an audacious 40-meter free kick in last weekend’s 2-0 victory over Switzerland to clinch the European Under-21 Championship for Spain.

Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea visited Manchester United on Tuesday when he was set to receive an offer from the English champions. The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper wrote on his official Twitter account: “I have been invited by MANU to see the club and the city with my family and to be given an offer.” The 20-year-old De Gea was pictured entering a medical facility in Manchester by the Daily Mail newspaper on Monday.

Highly rated Japan teenager Takashi Usami has signed for Germany’s Bayern Munich, J-League club Gamba Osaka said on Monday, the striker vowing to become the new Arjen Robben. The 19-year-old Usami, called up for Japan’s senior squad for the first time earlier this month, is expected to make the switch permanent if his six-month loan deal is successful “I was worried about leaving the team during the (Japanese) season but chances like this don’t come along every day,” Usami told a news conference.

AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi has promised a summer of spending to turn his AC Milan side into Champions League winners — and Tottenham’s Gareth Bale is on the Italian’s hit list. Berlusconi said signing Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi was impossible because “the Spanish game is rich and has different tax laws.” However, he insisted Milan will sign some of the biggest names in world football, with Bale being one of them.
