Inter Milan are lining up a big-money bid for Bolton’s star defender Gary Cahill, according to reports in Italy. Inter boss Rafa Benitez was reportedly interested in the 24-year-old while in charge at Liverpool and the Spaniard is ready to test Bolton’s resolve to keep hold of him with a £10m offer. But it is thought that such a bid would fall around £5m short of Bolton’s valuation of Cahill, who won his first England cap in the Three Lions’ 4-0 victory over Bulgaria at Wembley last month. Inter, treble winners last season, are currently third in Serie A and Benitez has made no secret of his desire to strengthen the squad during January. Leicester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is set to sign Darius Vassell, reports BBC Radio Leicester. The 30-year-old, who played under Eriksson at Manchester City, is a free agent after parting company with Turkish side MKE Ankaragücü. The Birmingham-born forward began his career with Aston Villa and signed for City for £2m in the summer of 2005. Vassell, who becomes Eriksson’s third signing, made 22 appearances for England scoring six goals. Last week, Curtis Davies and Kyle Naughton joined The Foxes on loan, and both made their debuts in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Hull City. (BBC Sport)
Rooney sparked talk of a Manchester United exit last week when he contradicted Sir Alex Ferguson’s claims that he had an ankle injury, and it is understood he is now refusing to discuss a contract extension. Rooney, 24, has little more than 20 months to run on his current deal and, amid claims he has fallen out with Ferguson, it is reported that United could cash in.

ARSENAL are set to reignite their interest in Cagliari goalkeeper Federico Marchetti in the summer, according to reports in Italy.
The Gunners were linked with the 27-year-old throughout the summer but made no bid for the keeper, who would cost around £7m.
Cagliari officials have revealed that they are still not close to an agreement with any club, although Marchetti has admitted: “My dream is to play in another great foreign championship.”

Wayne Rooney has informed Manchester United of his intention not to extend his $143,000-a-week deal which is due to expire in June 2012. The off-field scandal which enveloped Rooney earlier this season, with damaging allegations of liaisons with prostitutes, has proven to have delivered a terminal blow to his relationship with Ferguson, however, with the pair having thought to have fallen out with an “irretrievable breakdown.” Rooney’s form has evaporated since the revelations and Ferguson, claiming that he had an ankle injury, dropped him from the United first team to Rooney’s annoyance.
