In August it was announced by Pele himself that the New York Cosmos — the long dead North American Soccer League club that he made Americans care about in the ’70s — were coming back. Proclaiming their desire to join MLS and a commitment to developing young players with youth academies in New York and L.A., the reformed Cosmos have been trying to build hype for their new organization.

Long-suffering fans of the bygone Cosmos have pined for the return of their team, like those of the Cleveland Browns and Brooklyn Dodgers. Will they end up like the former or the latter? We’ll know more Sunday, when Pele himself is slated to make a big announcement at the Mayor’s Cup in Flushing Meadows. English businessman Paul Kemsley – a former vice chairman at the EPL’s Tottenham Hotspur – recently bought the name and image rights to the New York Cosmos club from Peppe Pinton with the idea of re-launching the team.
