Veteran defender C.J. Brown announced Thursday he’ll end his playing career after the Chivas match. Brown, who had been considering retirement but planned to make his decision after the season, made it official before the Fire took off for Los Angeles. He said the team’s disappointing 8-12-9 record had nothing to do with his decision.

Elderly striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco shot to international fame this summer as the oldest goalscorer in the tournament, bagging a penalty during Mexico’s 2-0 group stage romp over France.
After the tournament, Blanco, a legend in his homeland, returned to the relative quiet of Division 2 football. Now he’s back! Preparing to play a fireman in a Mexican TV drama series – alongside inescapable flirt Larissa Riquleme.

The Chicago Fire missed reaching 2009 MLS Cup final by falling in a penalty-kick tiebreaker. Yet the club fired Denis Hamlett and replaced him with Carlos De Los Cobos. Ives Galarcep points out that now, instead of being 12 yards away from glory, the Fire sits 12 points out of the playoffs as a nightmare season devolves into a sorry mess.
