Dimitar Berbatov may well be on his way out of Old Trafford even after Sir Alex Ferguson vowed to stick by the striker. Reports on Eurosport claim the Reds are looking to bring in cash and reduce their wage bill which could lead to the Bulgarian being shown the exit door this summer. Just last week Ferguson vowed to keep Berbatov: “He’s a fantastic footballer and he’ll be with us next year.” said the Scot. But after these latest revelations Italian giants Milan and Juventus have stepped up their interest in the 29-year-old who is valued at £20m.

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) -Bulgaria captain Dimitar Berbatov is retiring from international football, saying he wants to focus on his family and protecting his health.

Berbatov told reporters in Sofia on Thursday that “it was a difficult decision but I made it.”

The Manchester United striker has been captain of the national team for the last three years, but failed to lead the team to this year’s World Cup in South Africa.

Berbatov said that “everything has a beginning and an end, and that is today.”

The 29-year-old Berbatov made his international debut in 1999 and is Bulgaria’s all-time leading scorer with 48 goals in 77 appearances.

He said he had not discussed the issue with United manager Alex Ferguson.
